"Well, you see Mr. Lickona, whereas once upon a time, an editor could champion a young writer, nurture him through his early years and simply tell marketing to find a way, market realities today dictate otherwise. Today, marketing makes the decisions - they have to look at what they can sell, and they tell editorial what to do accordingly."
Yada yada yada.I suppose I should be sadder about the 5.2 million than the 1.2 million, but seriously -
1.2 mil for a memoir? From a youngster? On the basis of a proposal???If anyone wants me, I'll be huddled in the crawlspace under the house, slowly counting to 1.2 million.

Maybe the center of literatue and non-fiction has shifted. Its ideal is no longer a work of art by a writer, but rather an act of consumption by a consumer. That's why even authors are being branded, ever so subtly by their handlers as they relate to the media, not by the body of their work.
I think the key, from my extremely ignorant position, is to ancitipate a trend, score a hit, and then use it as leverage for what you want to do later.
You know, a little song and dance, show a little leg, and then hold out for the ring and proposal.
Maybe you could write a memoir about counting to 1.2 million in the crawlspace?
I hear Paramount calling...
Why you gotta bring this up on the weekend? There’s hope on the weekend? There’s a whole freakin 24 hours before the tummy twists into knot dreading the Monday morning orc pit.
Pull yourself together man! Don’t let the kids see you down in the crawlspace counting. “We don’t talk about daddy’s special counting place when we go outside the house children. Daddy‘s tired and just wants to be alone for awhile.”
I am going to go mow the lawn now before someone calls me from work. You crawl out from the hole, and dust yourself off. I will think of an idea while I am mowing, then we’ll pitch it for 10 million dollars. Then we’ll be the big bosses and tell everyone what to do!
"Daddy's special counting place" - that's rich. Thanks for the bucking-up, CM.
I'd say Zach's right. It's all about what's/who's hot right now, and what/who that is is often determined simply by the turning of the wheel, esp. when people don't know masterful writing from shithouse scrawling.
I gotta get me a new agent.
